@Bellehowell: Do either of you actually have children? If so, I find it hard to believe you'd be cool with a stranger beating them.

Yes I do. I let him learn from his mistakes. He knows how to behave in public and he's 1/4 the age of this kid. If the kid was running around the store, he was not with his father. How was the sales clerk to know that this child wasn't alone in the store running amuck? No parent in sight, what do you do? Kid threw a cookie jar at her. What do you do? She's 39. probably a hard-working mom herself. At 39, I'm impressed she was able to chase down and catch an unruly 8 year old boy. Those kids are quick! Plus, they're the size of 10-11 year old kids these days.

"BEATING?" Spanking and beating are totally different. I was spanked as a child. If I was at someone else's house acting the fool, I got spanked. When I got home, there was usually another spanking waiting for me. Was I beat? No. Was I disciplined? Yes. Spare the rod and spoil the child.

Lastly, if my child was acting this unruly among strangers in public, he's made his own bed. Would I call the cops on this woman? Nope. I would thank her for teaching my kid a lesson.

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
