No more strip clubs or gambling for those on welfare

February 6, 2012

Those on welfare, or TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), will no longer be able to access government benefits at strip clubs, liquor stores and casinos thanks to a new legislation past last week by the House of Representatives.

TANF provides cash assistance to working poor families, but the money is meant to be spent on food, rent and other living necessities-not on cruise ships or at strip clubs.  The bill, which is part of the larger payroll tax bill, would require states to develop policies to prevent spending of this kind to happen.

"This legislation stops waste, fraud, and abuse within the welfare program," said Rep. Charles Boustany, Jr., a Louisiana Republican. "It protects the public interest by ensuring money meant to help Americans get back on their feet is used for that very purpose."

What do you think of this proposed bill? Should government step in and regulate the ways in which those on welfare can spend their money?
