Nestle creates candy bars modeled after Girl Scout cookies

May 9, 2012

Nestlé announced Tuesday that they will be teaming with the Girl Scouts to create the ultimate treat - Girl Scout candy bars.  Thin Mints, Caramel Coconut, and Peanut Butter Crème are the three candy bar flavors expected to be released in June.  For a limited time, Girl Scout cookie lovers will be able to buy the candy bars in grocery stores nationwide.

The idea of a candy bar modeled after my three favorite Girl Scout cookies makes my mouth water.  However, as a former Girl Scout, I question the decision to sell them in stores.  My most memorable experience with the Girl Scouts was selling the cookies to eager customers with whom I had actual contact.  The mass distribution of the candy bars to retailers removes that personal experience between the Girl Scouts and their loyal customers.

I spoke to Kroger spokesman Glynn Jenkins on Wednesday to see if they would be selling the delectable treats at the Athens locations.  Jenkins told me that locals could expect to see the Nestlé bars on shelves sometime between July 29th and August 5th of this year.

Do you believe the partnership between Nestlé and the Girl Scouts was a good idea?

Which flavor do you plan on trying?

Blog: Can we please fix the Oscars?

Summary:  Fun facts: The first-ever Oscar ceremony, held in 1929, ran a brisk 15 minutes. By contrast, the longest was in 2002, clocking in at a monstrous 4 hours and change. As usual, there are things I loved about it and things I didn't. Rather than be snarky or complain, I'll offer a few suggestions on how the organizers might bring the show into the 21st century. Athens-Clarke County police officers responded to Pinewood Estates North on a 911 call concerning a heated domestic dispute. it reportedly was an argument over the lack of heat and food in a family's trailer and a woman was threatening to stab anyone who tried to take away her 7-month-old child. State patrol responded also, from their post nearby on U.S. Highway 29 North. The situation apparently was resolved. An officer reported he was driving the woman and infant to another home in Athens. read more
