A mid-major and a glass slipper

February 20, 2012

What is a mid-major? You might ask. Well, a mid-major is a term used to describe a team NOT in one of the major six athletic conferences (ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC). As we ease our way closer to the 2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament I can't help but ponder what mid-major's will surprise us this year. Last season we saw two mid-major teams meet in the final four (Butler and VCU). When I do my tournament brackets I often have at least one mid-major team advancing far into the tournament just for the fun of it. In the NCAA tournament these teams are referred to as a "Cinderella" becasue they advance further in the tournament than anticipated. It's like a fairy tale because not many people expect them to knock off higher-seeded teams (which could be regarded as the wicked Lady Tremain).

The current AP top-25 has a total of six mid-major teams that could make some noise this year in the tournament. Murray State, New Mexico, Wichita State, UNLV, Temple and San Diego State. Many are arguing that a one-loss Murray State squad can make a run in the tournament. However, I beleive the two teams apt for a run before the clock strikes midnight are New Mexico and UNLV. Only time will tell...

Looking at the team resume's here: espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/rankings, which sqaud do you think will be a Cinderella in this year's tournament?
