New York Daily News writer Andrea Tantaros compared Michelle Obama to a "modern day Marie Antoinette"

"But while most of the country is pinching pennies and downsizing summer sojourns - or forgoing them altogether - the Obamas don't seem to be heeding their own advice. Perhaps it could be that the Obamas, who seem to fancy themselves more along the lines of international celebrities than actual leaders, espouse a different view of sacrifice. From lavish trips to Spain to reportedly flying Bo, the President's Portuguese water dog, on a separate aircraft to vacation with them in Maine, to a date night in New York City that perhaps cost nearly $100,000, their idea of austerity is really just the lap of luxury, at least for ordinary folks. Incredibly, the Obamas have long portrayed themselves as precisely such commoners. Instead, Michelle Obama seems more like a modern-day Marie Antoinette - the French queen who spent extravagantly on clothes and jewels without a thought for her subjects' plight - than an average mother of two."--by ANDREA TANTAROS

I don't know how to make $12 million dollars, but Michelle knows how to spend it!

"Branding her 'disgusting' and 'a vacation junkie', they say the 47-year-old mother-of-two has been indulging in five-star hotels, where she splashes out on expensive massages and alcohol. The 'top source' told the National Enquirer: 'It's disgusting. Michelle is taking advantage of her privileged position while the most hardworking Americans can barely afford a week or two off work. 'When it's all added up, she's spent more than $10 million in taxpayers' money on her vacations.'--By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

"President Barack Obama has received some criticism throughout his presidency over various vacations and “date-nights” with Michelle Obama, all at taxpayer expense. But exactly how much has he spent on personal pleasures and costly comforts? According to a new book, which questions presidential perks as a whole, the POTUS spent $1.4 billion last year alone. I'm curious if any Athenstalks posters will comment about her Royal Highness Michelle Obama and all of her vacations and the $10-$12 million that has reportedly been spent on her vacations?

I'm also curious as to why it's so hard to find discussions about all of the vacations in the mainstream news.

Blog: Can we please fix the Oscars?

Summary:  Fun facts: The first-ever Oscar ceremony, held in 1929, ran a brisk 15 minutes. By contrast, the longest was in 2002, clocking in at a monstrous 4 hours and change. As usual, there are things I loved about it and things I didn't. Rather than be snarky or complain, I'll offer a few suggestions on how the organizers might bring the show into the 21st century.
