Memories of cars

February 20, 2012

My father probably has the worst memory possible for any human being. You can ask him about where we lived or about our lives growing up and he just fumbles to remember.  He has always been like that.

On the other hand, my mother can recite you where we lived, what illnesses the kids had, and even what shirts we wore to school each year.

If you want my father to remember anything, all you need to do is bring up what car the family was driving.  Cars are very important to my father.

Growing up we never had a lot of money and my father detests making payments on anything. Our family cars were usually old cars my father bought for between $500 - $1,000 and he worked on them to keep them running.

My father and I would spend Saturday afternoons together working on those hunks of junk to make sure they would run again for another week.

My father can recite every family car we ever had, where we were living, and what parts we replaced on that car. Because my father and I spent so much time working on those cars, the cars became part of our family. My brother and I used to name the cars after Sesame Street characters.  Blue cars were named Grover, green cars were names Oscar, etc...

My father may have a bad memory but he always remembers what's important: family.  The cars were a part of our family because we worked on them so much together and because it was a way to unite our family into one place, together.

Did your father have the same attachments to cars that my father has?

Were there objects in your family as a kid that you considered part of the family?

I am going to get my mother to scan in some family photos that included some of our family cars and post them here.

See if you can find some old car photos to post here. I love to see pictures of old cars.

It has always fascinated me how women and men have different triggers for memories. What are some other differences you see?

When we finish posting all our photos, I am going to show my father this comment thread and see how many car models he can name.  He is quite good at that.
