Mass. schools encouraged to serve local food

September 17, 2011

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — School children and college students around Massachusetts are about to get a taste of the local harvest.
Schools and colleges are being urged to serve fresh fruit and vegetables and other food grown at local farms to students during Harvest for Students Week, which starts Monday and runs through Friday.
The initiative is part of the Massachusetts Farm to School project, which is aimed at helping local farms while also addressing the problem of childhood obesity.
State agriculture officials say more than 100 Massachusetts farms sell food directly to schools and colleges, and more than 200 public school districts have reported serving locally-grown food in their cafeterias over the last year.

Would this be an opportunity for Athens to inject some money into the local economy and teach our children how to eat right?
How would you feel if schools in Athens including UGA started using locally-grown food?
