MARK BEARD GIVES VERBAL

December 14, 2011

You knew when he didn't leave town following the GALA and announced he would hang around town a few days that there was a real chance he would end up a DAWG. He has three years of eligibility left so I hope we get to know him well over the next three years.

I just hope that he can be part of the answer to our dismal situation at the OT spots that has developed over the last couple of years. We get by ok as long as we are not facing DLs and LBs with that SEC type speed on both corners. Although he hails from the Birmingham area and was recruited by TROY, he has been honing his OL skills as a JUCO player in Coffeyville. He wants to play in the "league" and indicated his preference for a pro style offense in which to further his development towards that NFL dream. MISS ST and ARKANSAS were our competition although clearly that spread of Mullens wasn't what Beard was looking for. Petrino was another story. I'm sure that Friend's old Alabama contacts helped convince this kid that I-20 is a pleasant drive to Athens.

He has some athleticism and hopefully will be a little quicker than the traditional turtles that we have lined up at OT over the last couple of years. We shall see what Joe T can do with this specimen. Got to improve that "first step" quickness if we ever hope to get a surge on that OL. With Theus, Pyke, and hopefully Avery Young, the DAWGS may have as athletic core of OLs as we have had since Richt arrived. God forbid that they should all develop and reach their potential.. I wouldn't have anything to gripe about!

It would be nice to see a DAWG OL face those elite SEC caliber teams and actually create and maintain a pocket for our QBs in pass protection and actually get a push on those "third and one" running plays. While Beard was very impressive in that JUCO league and wound up All Conference, when he faces those DLs from ALABAMA, SOUTH CAROLINA, LSU, and FLORIDA he will realize that he is not in Kansas anymore! He will also be NFL ready if he can handle them. Let's pray he can make that next step up in competition.

Welcome to the DAWG NATION young man!
