Live to Work? Work to Live?

They don't live for work ... they work to live.

Teenagers and young adults - the so-called Generation Y - have watched with horror as their parents worked punishing hours in their scramble for money and status. Now, as this group go in search of jobs, they have different priorities. They care less about salaries, and more about flexible working, time to travel and a better work-life balance. And employers are having to meet their demands.

Every one of us in the media industry accepts that this career is a "lifestyle," not a job. Many of you can probably relate in your own professions. After years of being a workaholic- I'm finally TRYING to create some sort of balance- but it isn't easy. That's for sure.

How do you feel about your work? Can you forget about it when you're home? If so, how have you failed or succeeded in balancing work and personal time? What do you think about the Gen Y philosophy?

    Chuck Williams wants your money

    State Rep. Chuck Williams, R-Watkinsville, is holding two fundraisers next week, indicating that he expects to have opposition either in July or November. The fundraisers are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Holiday Inn in downtown Athens and Tuesday at Springhill Suites in Oconee County. He's asking for a $100, $250 or $500 donation, but contributions aren't necessary to attend. Secretary of State Brian Kemp, Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens and state Sen. Bill Cowsert, R-Athens, are the hosts. read more
