Left behind: Athens family carries on after father's deportation

Crimes like these are common for undocumented immigrants living under the government’s radar. His troubles were bigger than stolen goods. He would never see his children again except through visitation glass. Some years earlier, Arreola left his native Mexico, crossed the border illegally and took off east for Georgia. Here he would meet Sandra, who came to the U.S. in the early 1990s from Durango.

They started a family, four children who are all U.S. citizens. Arreola faced four charges: two counts of theft by taking for purchasing the two license plates found in his car, and two more for driving without insurance and a driver’s license. He’d get probation. And deportation.

    Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. Highlight: Would set hours of operation of each Athens-Clarke County "building campus" -- e.g. City Hall, the courthouse and Dougherty Street government building -- at 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Park hours would either be set by the Athens-Clarke County manager or the Mayor and Commission. The ordinance has been derided by members of Occupy Athens and others as seeking to enforce a curfew on public property, thus damaging their First Amendment right to peacably assemble for long-term protests. read more
