Journalism Gone Amuck?

January 31, 2012

This story ran in the New York Times last week.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/27/sports/ncaafootball/at-yale-the-collap...

I am not commenting on whether the young man in this article is guilty or innocent. I am questioning the New York Times' decision to run this article without identifying their sources more clearly.
Neither Yale or anyone from the Rhodes Trust commented. The accussed was not reached for comment and the author stated in regards to the victim that "The New York Times has not spoken with her and does not know her name.".
I understand and support a journalist's right to protect their sources. In this case however, shouldn't the New York Times, at a minimum, identify how the sources are related to those in the story; family, friend, Yale employee, Rhodes affiliate, etc...?

Is the 24/7 news cycle leading to the decline of good jounalism?
