Idea For Athfest

January 14, 2013

I have an idea for Athfest...

Each year have a special guest host (as famous and cool as possible) it could be a musician, band or other artist. They would be crowned the Queen or King of Athfest and be given the 'Athfest Key to the City', which would be a Gibson SG. At that point they would give a little lecture about their personal story pertaining to the arts and their own biography.
They would do a finale show for Athfest and/or a Classic Center performance (which would probably require a $5 charge in addition to the Athfest bracelet).

The point of all this is to put a crown on the event, that would get some national coverage.

South by Southwest had Springsteen do this routine last time, maybe we could get John Cougar Mellencamp!

Ideally the host would be a good sport and show up at some other events and announce, or even sit in with a few bands.

That would be fun.

I admit, I was not a fan of this show while it was on network TV, but I watched it a year ago on Netflix and was hooked.  read more

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more
