Why wouldn't the Athens-Clarke County Road Dept. take care of the icy overpass problems? Don't they have winter plans in place? How about some sand, or salt, or something??? Surely they were aware of the weather warnings like everyone else. What's the deal?

If I am not mistaken, the DOT rules have changed and counties are now allowed to assist in clearing state roads. After all, city buses have to cross these overpasses, too.

Do I have this right? The county road department knew there was going to be ice on the bridges and overpasses but CHOSE to do NOTHING to ensure the safety of people coming into town and just let them WRECK?

I had questioned this problem during winter's past and was told that the salt is not environmentally safe for the river and the stuff that is safe is too expensive so the department chose to do nothing. They just waited for the police to notify them when there was a wreck so they would then be aware of the icy problem. WTH????

If the county is not responsible for providing safety measures like this then what do we need them for? They stink at adjusting the traffic lights around town when the students are gone, many of the city road signs have so much dirt and mold on them you can hardly read them.Who in the world is in charge over there and who is watching over that department. How are they allowed to make these kinds of decisions without some oversight?

I'd be talking to my lawyer if I had wrecked because the county CHOSE to do nothing to protect drivers like me from hazardous road conditions they were fully aware of.

There are many questions that need to answered here. Please explain.
