Gay Marriage vs The Bible

June 28, 2011

Author Jonathan Dudley, gives an analysis of the Bible, claiming that people who oppose same-sex relations and marriage in the name of the Bible are picking and choosing. Many have discussed this topic, but Dudley's take is interesting, because he grew up in an evangelical community and graduated from Yale's Divinity school.

In the argument, Dudley brings up the point that Paul the Apostle is the only one who writes about same-sex relations in the Bible claiming them to be "unnatural." However, Paul also claims a man having long hair and a woman having short hair are "unnatural," too. Obviously, in today's society, we wouldn't condemn a woman for having a pixie cut or a man for growing his hair out. That's the center point of Dudley's argument. He believes we shouldn't take everything from the Bible at face value- since it was written thousands of years ago.

What are your thoughts? Should what's written in the bible be taken literally?
