"Predictably, Iran warmly welcomed Grass's poem. Press TV, Iran's state-owned English-language satellite channel, hailed it as a literary sensation. "Never before in Germany's postwar history has a prominent intellectual attacked Israel in such a courageous way," it said. "Metaphorically speaking, the poet has launched a deadly lyrical strike against Israel."

And granted: I've broken my silence
because I'm sick of the West's hypocrisy;
and I hope too that many may be freed
from their silence, may demand
that those responsible for the open danger we face renounce the use of force,
may insist that the governments of
both Iran and Israel allow an international authority
free and open inspection of
the nuclear potential and capability of both.

Storm Continues After German Writer’s Poem Against Israel

From Wikipedia:

April 4, 2012, Grass published a poem in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, entitled Was gesagt werden muss ("What must be said"), where he expressed concern about an Israeli military strike against Iran. The poem states: “Why do I only say now, aged and with my last ink: the atomic power Israel is endangering the already fragile world peace?” His answer to this rhetorical question is that the "incomparable" crimes of Nazis against Jews, and the duty of Germans to avoid anti-Semitism, have kept him silent. But he is no longer willing to stay quiet: “I admit: I will be silent no longer, because I am sick of the hypocrisy of the West.”[

    Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

    Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

    UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

    The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
