First Ever Concert in Sanford Stadium occurred 50 years ago in 1963 not 2013

February 19, 2013

The concert that is currently being promoted as the first ever concert in Sanford Stadium will no doubt be a great one, how could it fail with such a line-up but for the sake of historical accuracy it will not be the first one as advertised. With 40,000 in attendance, the honor of being the first ever concert in Sanford Stadium belongs to the "who's who" of R&B of that era. 40,000 attended the UGA Homecoming concert at Sanford Stadium in October of 1963 that featured Jerry Butler, Major Lance, Don Covay & The Goodtimers, Irma Thomas, Darlene Love , Mary Wells, King Curtis, Gene Chandler, and Don Ford/Dee Dee Ford AND backed by Roanoke's greatest band ever, The Divots. Meanwhile Tommy Altman and I sat in desks at Waycross High School probably wishing we were there.

Date: UGA Homecoming October, 1963
