Embracing opportunity.

December 3, 2012

What do you see when you look at the economic condition of our nation today?
I recently saw an episode of "shark tank" on television. They had a series of people with creative business ideas who pitched several very wealthy entrepreneurs about investing in their businesses.

This is their offer to everyone. Whether you just have a fantastic idea, are a start up or already operating successfully and looking to expand, if you feel you have a lucrative business or product and could use financial backing, then Shark Tank is just the show for you.

There it is!!! All you need is an idea! Mark Zuckerberg came up with the idea for facebook when he was in college and today it has been recently estimated to be worth between 50 to 75 billion dollars.
The iphone, the ipad, and the laptop computer have changed the world that I grew up in. There was a time when it took weeks to cross over from the east to the west coast, but now we do it in hours. This is possible because two brothers named Orville and Wilbur Wright on December 17th, in 1903 launched what up to that point had just been an idea...the airplane.

America may be down right now, but we will come back up because we are a free society that values idea's and opportunity. When I get up in the morning I see opportunity. Because I see opportunity I am not afraid to dream. Don't be afraid to dream of a better life, but be willing to work for it. Dreams require effort and the greater the dream the more work will be required. I heard someone say recently that the reason many people never see opportunity when it comes is because it shows up in overalls and a lunch bucket...ready to go to work. Dream big, work hard, and you will succeed.

Blog: Can we please fix the Oscars?

Summary:  Fun facts: The first-ever Oscar ceremony, held in 1929, ran a brisk 15 minutes. By contrast, the longest was in 2002, clocking in at a monstrous 4 hours and change. As usual, there are things I loved about it and things I didn't. Rather than be snarky or complain, I'll offer a few suggestions on how the organizers might bring the show into the 21st century. Athens-Clarke County police officers responded to Pinewood Estates North on a 911 call concerning a heated domestic dispute. it reportedly was an argument over the lack of heat and food in a family's trailer and a woman was threatening to stab anyone who tried to take away her 7-month-old child. State patrol responded also, from their post nearby on U.S. Highway 29 North. The situation apparently was resolved. An officer reported he was driving the woman and infant to another home in Athens. read more
