The election is over and it’s clear I’ve been outvoted

December 4, 2012

The following was a letter-to-the-editor submitted by Savannah physician and author Dr. David Denostro. It appeared last weekend in The Savannah Morning News:

The election is over and it’s clear I’ve been outvoted.

I’ve been outvoted by government dependents who believe that my lifetime of $1.8 million in tax payments just can’t sustain them.

I’ve been outvoted by high school and college teenagers, most of whom have yet to develop common sense, let alone the wisdom to direct a great nation.

I’ve been outvoted by women who feel grown-up enough to have sex with their boyfriends and husbands, but want me to pay to prevent the reproductive consequences of their pleasurable activities.

I’ve been outvoted by Hispanic citizens who want American citizenship granted to their illegal family, while asking me to ignore the fact that their first act as a prospective American was to break the law.

I’ve been outvoted by the Obama-phone crowd, who’ve changed Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s refrain to, “Free at last. Free at last. Thank God, Obama, life’s free at last.”

I’ve been outvoted by Americans who desire a president that values charisma over character, celebrity over competence, image over integrity and symbolism over substance.

I’ve been outvoted by people desperate for jobs, but foolishly choosing a president that despises capitalism and the free enterprise system that creates them.

I’ve been outvoted by Americans willing to accept a divided nation under man’s government, rather than a united nation under God.

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
