Dancing away childhood obesity

February 20, 2012

We've seen Michelle Obama do everything from pushups with Ellen DeGeneres to feeding veggie pizza to Jay Leno as a part of her "Let's Move" campaign to end childhood obesity.

This month, the First Lady brought the campaign to Iowa to mark the second anniversary of the campaign.  As of 2010, Iowa was ranked the 19th healthiest state in the nation and is currently working towards the number one spot.  (Georgia is currently 37th on the list, which I blame entirely on Paula Deen.)

The goal of the campaign is to fight childhood obesity by selling healthy eating and exercise to children as a fun and rewarding lifestyle. The event hosted by Ms. Obama included 14,000 sixth- to ninth-graders, decorations, and a giant cake made of fruit.

Do you think events like this should be held at every school? Are these events effective or will kids go right back to playing Xbox all day after the event?
