Can a positive pregnancy test detect testicular cancer?

November 13, 2012

There may be more than one use for a pregnancy test.

According to a comic posted on reddit.com, a man decided to use his wife's pregnancy test as joke.  He peed on the little stick and it came up positive.

He told a friend about it who was so amused he created a comic strip about the situation.  The friend posted the strip on reddit.com and users pointed out that it could mean the man has cancer.

The man went to an oncologist and he tested positive for testicular cancer.

It says like an urban legend but according to cnn.com, this is possible.

Pregnancy tests are set to detect a hormone called Beta-HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin).  This hormone is also produced by men when certain types of testicular cancer are present.

This is not a very reliable method for testing since it takes a very high level of this hormone in men to show a positive pregnancy test result.

This has to be the strangest story I have ever heard.

Has anyone heard of any other health stories that turned out positive because of coincendence or an accident?

Men should perform a self-examination looking for testicular cancer on a pretty regular basis.

If there are any unusual bumps, the man should check with his doctor.

It is November and it is men's cancer health awareness month.

What are you doing to help spread the word?

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
