British Airways' crash warning scares the peanuts out of passengers

January 18, 2012

Imagine you're flying 35,000 feet in the air when an automated message tells you that the plane will be making an emergency water landing...twice.

This was the scene on a British Airways flight from Miami to Heathrow. Passengers panicked (understandably so) until flight attendants informed them that the message was played by mistake and the plane was flying safely.

Passengers reported that screams filled the cabin until the flight attendants were able to reassure customers. The passengers were issued letters of apology for their "undue concern" upon landing.

This wasn't the first time British Airways has had a false alarm. A similar message played on an August 2010 flight.

My question is: why is there an automated crash warning at all? If you're going to be flying me into a body of water, the least you could do is get a flight attendant to pass that news along. I would think that such a mix up would warrant some flight vouchers.

What kind of action would you take if this happened on your flight? Would this information make you think twice about flying British Airways?
