Beyond Tobacco Road: Rivalry week looms large

February 6, 2012

Today marks the beginning of what's fondly (or not so fondly) referred to as "Rivalry Week" in college basketball. The marquee matchup: No. 5 North Carolina hosts No. 10 Duke on Wednesday night. Granted, I am a North Carolina alumnus. So my perception of the UNC-Duke rivalry doesn't come withought an embedded bias. However, I believe most would agree the Battle for Tobbaco Road is the fiercest college basketball rivalry in America. I can't help but get chill bumps while watching this video preview (wishing I could be in Chapel Hill Wednesday night to experience the thrill): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA1D7r9uBYI

Wednesday nights game in the Dean E. Smith Center isn't the only big rivalry game this week though. No. 1 Kentucky hosts No. 8 Florida on Tuesday night. Also, No. 2 Syracuse this week will host No. 12 Georgetown, and Connecticut. I'm sure these college campuses will be rocking come time for each of these games as fans take in the elation of the respective rivalries.

I'm going to stop now because I want to know what you think. Do you think UNC-Duke is the top rivalry in college basketball? If so, what rivalries rank behind it? If not, what's your favorite college basketball rivalry?
