The best way to buy a bike in Athens

February 7, 2012

With gas prices and my waistline on the rise again, I've been thinking that a great way to mitigate both would be to get a bike.

I had a bike for a couple of years in Athens and loved having it. I don't even mind the hills. Unfortunately, it was stolen about a year ago and I haven't had the motivation or the means to go hunting after another. Now that I have both, I'm finding it difficult to choose how I want to do it.

I'm looking for a used bike. Something that's pretty solid, nothing fancy. Itll be for around-town travel, but not for long distances or racing or anything.

I've checked Ben's Bikes on Broad, but haven't found anything that I really like. Prices are a little higher,  but the customer support and maintanence access you get from buying from a shop is appealing.

I've also looked on Craigslist, and found a wider variety of cheaper bikes. But I'm always wary of buying things from strangers, and don't know enough about bikes to know whether I'm getting a good deal.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for the best way to do this, or had a similar experience they wanted to share. More to the point, if you have a good condition bike that'll fit a six-foot guy and you're interested in getting rid of, let me know Wink
