Best cold weather drinks (with a kick)

February 9, 2012

If you can believe it, I don't actually spend all my waking hours interning. When not making snarky comments here, I spend my time bringing home the bacon at a local liquor store.

As you can imagine, working around so much booze and getting a pretty good discount has greatly expanded the scope of my collegiate alcoholism. On the other hand, it's also increased my appreciation of fine beers, wine, and spirits (you're not an alcoholic if you only drink the good stuff, right?).

I've built up a pretty impressive liquor cabinet, and now that it's cold I'm looking for some delicious warm drinks to keep the blood flowing. The standards like hot toddies and irish coffees are fine, but I'm hoping to expand my options and try something a little more exotic.

I'll start with one I've adapted from a drink I get at Highwire. I don't remember what it's called.

2 parts unchilled hot (spicy) ginger ale

2 parts hot orange juice, no pulp

2 parts spiced rum (Sailor Jerry is a good choice, none of that Captain Morgan junk)

1 teaspoon brown sugar.

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Mix the rum, sugar, cinnamon and orange juice before adding the ginger ale so it stays bubbly longer. I imagine it would go well with a wedge of lemon or orange or a cinnamon stick, but I rarely get that fancy.

What do you drink to keep the chill off?
